a house in luanda

program : international competition

location : luanda . angola

year : 2010

promoter : lisbon architecture triennale

status : submitted

collaborators : qoppa engineering

The aim of this architecture competition is to design a single family dwelling that is radically cheap to build for Luanda, a city which is under extreme demographic pressure and is undergoing an intense process of transformation, and that is suited to the cultural, economic and social circumstances of the area.

Like the bioengineered being created in the film Blade Runner, identical to an adult human, but with superior strength, agility, and variable intelligence, this model should be designed to be similar to a Luanda's housing unit, but have superior strength and stability, quality materials, to be easy and fast to build, and have variable options of typologies and solar orientation.

pavilions in the patio
The lot becomes the patio. The patio is ‘inhabited’ by the replicants. Instead of linking all the modules together to obtain a single house, the modules are independent, and distributed according to each typology and considering solar orientation. Providing the family common spaces (indoors and outdoors), as well as their own private space.
